New York | An Indian origin medical professional in the United States, Dr Perumunda Sharma is all praise for his good experiences with the soothing effects of garlic pearls and normal onion at a time of COVID fears. He testifies with utmost enthusiasm the remedial qualities of these after a successful recovery for himself from COVID infection.
Dr Sharma, who hails from Chennai in Tamilnadu is a septuagenarian physician with an active license to practice in the State of New York in USA. Through a Facebook post Dr Sharma shared his experiences using the herbal products in healing coronavirus infection. He developed symptoms of COVID-19 disease on March 14 and went under quarantine and treatment very soon.
Though his initial test for the corona virus came back inconclusive, the subsequent test done a week later confirmed positively that he was infected with the virus. He had fever and cough with shifting joint pains in the knees and ankles. He did not have sore throat, body aches, vomiting or diarrhea.
In his words" Since there is no currently approved treatments for this disease, I resorted to experimenting with the Allium species: allium cepa (regular onion) and allium sativum (regular garlic). Both of these have been reported to have antiviral properties due to allicin and its transformation products namely diallyl polysulfides and ajoene, the latter being more potent than allicin.
"Starting from March 13, everyday, I ate a quarter of raw red onion (the size of an average lemon) at lunch time and dinner time. I would chew the onion into a pulp and then swallow. In this manner, the onion juices can get absorbed quickly. My wife made garlic chutney with peanuts and we consumed that too. The onion and garlic had to be raw because boiling inactivates the antiviral properties.
"Believe it or not, since I started this regimen, I had steadily improved, my fever subsided over the next four or five days, and the cough also disappeared. My pulse oximetry (indicating the extent of blood oxygenation) also steadily improved from 95% to my usual level between 98 and 99%. The fact that the pulse oximetry dropped to 95% indicated that I did have an element of mild pneumonia due to the COVID-19 disease. It is the progression of the pneumonia that kills people. I have now fully recovered.
"The treatments of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are meant only for very severe cases that need hospitalization. I tried to nip it in the bud before it became severe. I did not take them. But I did take levaquin 750 mgs. for 10 days as prophylaxis for secondary bacterial infection in the lungs."
Dr Sharma did his MBBS from Madras medical college and later went to USA for residency Training at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He served as part-time Medical Director at The Community Hospice and retired as Regional Medical Director there. The Facebook post is accessible here.
