Veteran Malayalam actor Unnikrishnan Namboothiri passes away

Renowned Malayalam and Tamil actor Unnikrishnan Namboothiri passed away in a couple of days after recovering from a COVID-19 infection. He had recovered completely and had been discharged the other day from a private hospital in Kannur.

Kannur | Renowned Malayalam and Tamil actor Unnikrishnan Namboothiri passed away in a private hospital in Payyannur in Kannur district a day after recovering from COVID-19 infection. He had recovered completely and had been discharged the other day from hospital.
A family friend of the actor said Namboothiri felt some uneasiness and was admitted to a private hospital in Payyannur near to his native place on Wednesday but he passed away in the evening.
The 98 year old actor who has acted in numerous movies was known for his comedy and grandfather roles. He was known for his roles in Malayalam movies Deshadanam, Kalyanaraman, Kaliyattam etc and Tamil movies Kandukondain Kandukondain, Pammal K. Sambandam and Chandramukhi.
He is survived by his children Devi, Bhavadas, Yamuna and P V Kunhikrishnan, who is a judge at the Kerala High Court. He is also the father-in-law of musician, composer and filmmaker Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, and grandfather of composer Deepankuran.
He had been discharged after testing negative for Coronavirus recently. Reports are that he was rushed to the private hospital in Payyannur after suffering from pneumonia, but tested negative for COVID-19 at that time. 
But a couple of days after being discharged after recovering from pneumonia, he was apparently again admitted in hospital due to fever and tested positive for coronavirus this time around.
He acted in numerous movies in Malayalam including 'Kaikudanna Nilavu', 'Madhuranombarakattu', 'Meghmalhar',  'Rappakal' and 'Pokkiri Raja'. His role as a romantic grandfather in 'Kalyanaraman' was a huge hit.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Ramesh Chennithala condoled the demise of the actor.
"Namboothiri was an amazing actor who excelled in playing character roles. It's a huge loss to the cultural world," Vijayan said in his condolence message.
Chennithala said Namboothiri was known as the grandfather of South Indian cinema. "....with his demise, Malayalam movie industry has lost an excellent actor," Chennithala said.
