Idukki (Ker) | A 35-year old woman met with a tragic end early Friday as a wild elephant trampled her to death in this high range district of Kerala.

While the woman died on the spot, her husband had a narrow escape with injuries, police said.

Both of them were tea plantation labourers who were said to be on the way from neighbouring Tamil Nadu after seeing their relatives there, they said.

The deceased woman, identified as Viji, was attacked by the jumbo while riding pillion with her husband Kumar, through a forest-fringe road in the Kerala -Tamil Nadu border near Anayirankal, over 20 kms away from famed tourist town Munnar.

Frightened to see the wild elephant in the middle of the road in the early morning, her husband tried to turn the bike but lost control over the vehicle and both of them fell down.

Before they could even stand up, the jumbo trampled Viji as her husband could only remain a mute spectator.

He later ran away to safety as the animal came after him, police said.

The woman's body was later shifted to the mortuary of the nearby taluk hospital, where her husband was admitted for treatment.
